Digital object identifier

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A digital object identifier (DOI) is a string of characters used to uniquely identify an electronic document or other entity. The DOI of a document remains fixed for the entire lifespan of that document, unlike URLs that can change with the change of the file structure of the web server where the online content is published. The DOI system also provides a mechanism for locating an updated URL for a document based on its identifier and for associating other forms of metadata to an object; thus, referring to a document only using its DOI provides a more stable mechanism than URLs for references to online content.

The DOI system is implemented through a federation of DOI Registration Agencies coordinated by the International DOI Foundation, which developed the system and controls it.
